The joy of any parent is to see their children take the next step in their life because that pays testament to what constitutes progress. That joy is multifold when it is a grandmother taking care of her second generation offspring and that is what it is like for Bedina Achieng, 70, whose teenage grandson is under care.

Felix John Osuro scored 393 marks in the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, very good marks by all standards to enable the young man join the school of his dreams in Form One. Yet Felix could not because his frail grandma had no means to send her to high school and so hope turned into despair as the future looked gloomy with no possibility of advancing beyond primary school.

But his hunger for education and desire to continue with his education saw him take to social media to plead for help from well wishers. And, that’s how Dafabet heard his cry and decided to come to his aid.

Today, Felix is now in school and left with just one thing to worry about – doing well in his studies.

Through Dafabet United for Africa, the charity arm of the betting giant, Dafabet has taken up Felix’s studies until university in support the grandmother who even struggles to put a meal on the table.

“”When I saw the Dafabet team at a home with my grandson’s shopping, that is when I believed that Felix was going to school. Thank you so much Defabet for coming to our aid may God greatly bless so you,” said Felix’s grandma with a confident smile.

“I can now sleep in peace my Osuro has already been taken to school, he is going to be admitted today (Monday) at Sawagongo High school.”

Dafabet head of marketing, Elizabeth Ngirau, revealed they had been moved into supporting Felix because “when we heard his appeal and meeting his grandmother we took the decision as a no-brainer”.

“We took interest in Osuro’s situation and decided to sponsor his education until university level,” said Ngirau, adding that Dafabet was keen on a more aggressive and robust Corporate Social Responsibility to impact on the community with which they do business.

“This is one of our key values as a brand because it’s the community that makes our brand tick so we really have to give back and stories like this one are so inspirational that Dafabet will always be ready to chip in so as to put a smile on someone’s face,” she added.

“We will also assist his grandma to monitor his performance and have him properly guided through his education so that he makes the right academic and overall career choices.”

The student, who says he is grateful that he would not worry about school fees, says he will work to repay the gesture of kindness with good grades in school.

“I want to thank Dafabet for everything that they have done for me and my grandparents, I will work and promise to make you proud,” said the student who in most times was accommodated by his teacher – Boaz Otieno.

“Felix was a promising student, and I was very happy when the result came out. He has a bright future if he can only get someone who can hold his hands, then he will surprise many,” said the teacher.
